Hands on DC sends an important message
to our children: The community cares about your future.

Hands on DC is an all-volunteer project that creates better schools and brighter futures for students in the District of Columbia. Thousands of volunteers work with us each year to organize work days to improve the physical learning environment of DC Public Schools. In addition to our year round projects, our primary event is a one-day spring Work-a-thon that improves conditions in the public schools and raises money for college scholarships. Since 1994 more than 26,000 volunteers have created a better environment for learning in over 120 schools and have collected more than $570,000 to help local students pay for further education.

Hands on DC works because of support from every part of the community and the DC Public School system. Financial contributors include businesses and non-profits, and our volunteers come from church groups, government agencies, and local colleges and universities. Many of them return year after year - a recommendation we're especially proud to receive.

There are several ways to learn more about Hands on DC. This Web site explains what we do and how we do it. We hope you'll see why the Washington Post called Hands on DC a "dramatic demonstration of what a difference a day makes."

Hands on DC is completely volunteer-run. For information on how to get involved in leading this organization, visit our Organizing Committee page.
