Hands on DC Honored by D.C. Board of Education

Earlier this year, the District of Columbia Board of Education officially honored Hands on DC (HoDC) by passing a resolution commending the organization for its work to create better schools and brighter futures for D.C. public school students, and praising the "productive partnership" between HoDC and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS).

Specifically, the resolution, approved on May 9, 2003, recognized the April 5, 2003, work-a-thon which drew more than 2,500 volunteers who participated in more than 500 projects in 38 public schools. The resolution also noted that during the past nine years, Hands on DC has raised $400,000 in scholarships for local students; has created better learning environments in more than 100 local schools; and has organized more than 19,000 volunteers from diverse backgrounds.

Tracy Costigan and Christina Russell, the 2004 HoDC event co-directors said they are honored by the resolution and are excited to build on the past success of the organization. "We are incredibly proud of all of our volunteers who have made Hands on DC a success, and we appreciate the relationship between the organization, the school district and the local community that has evolved during the past nine years," Costigan said. Russell said she hoped the recognition would encourage this year's volunteers who are already hard at work planning the 2004 events. "This year, we want to celebrate our tenth birthday by beating previous records for raising scholarship funds and completing projects," she said.
