Hands on DC Celebrates 10 Years of Service to DC Public Schools
Thousands of volunteers raise scholarships and improve schools at May 1 work-a-thonWhat:
Hands on DC is a community based nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers. Our mission is to create better schools and brighter futures for students in the District of Columbia. Thousands of volunteers have a great time each spring as they join together for a one-day work-a-thon that improves physical conditions in the public schools and raises money for college scholarships. For the past 10 years, more than 19,000 volunteers have created a better environment for learning in over 100 schools and have collected more than $400,000 to help local students pay for further education.When:

Kick-off Rally at Cardozo Senior High School, 1300 Clifton Street, NW Work-a-thon volunteer projects conducted at 42 public schools across DC. Mayor Anthony Williams will volunteer at Emery Elementary School, 1720 First Street, NE, and Councilman Jim Graham will serve at Garrison Elementary School, 1200 S Street, NW.Rally speakers include Hands on DC co-founder Jacquelyn Davis, College Bound scholarship recipient Ebony Lea, and HoDC 2004 co-directors Tracy Costigan and Christina Russell. Hands on DC works because of support from every part of the community and the DC Public School system. Financial contributors include businesses and non-profits, and our volunteers come from across the community and include church groups, government agencies, neighborhood associations, local colleges and universities, and community leaders Mayor Anthony Williams and DC Councilman Jim Graham.
