Hands on DC Announces Work-a-Thon Schools
Thirty-three DC public schools to benefit from HoDC maintenance and repair
Washington, DC, April 5, 2005. Hands on DC (HoDC), an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that conducts annual citywide work-a-thons to improve DC public schools, has announced the list of schools selected to be a part of this year's work-a-thon on May 7, 2005. The group will send approximately 2,000 volunteers to 33 DC public schools, including Aiton Elementary School, Shaw Junior High School and Cardozo Senior High School (see list below) to repair and upgrade school facilities.
"This year's work-a-thon is shaping up to be another great event through which DC residents can give something back to their community and its young people," said Katie Ferrier, event co-chair. "We're really excited to be working with the some of the same schools again this year and look forward to making a difference in schools that are participating for the first time."
"Hands on DC is poised again this year to make a difference, not just for a day each spring but throughout the entire year. We put an emphasis on building long-lasting, sustainable relationships among the schools, area businesses and community organizations who help sponsor our activities," said event Co-Chair Billy Pizer. "Over the course of the year, we also join forces with other local volunteer groups to share tools and equipment."
Each year, DC public schools submit applications to Hands on DC, including a list of projects they would like completed by work-a-thon volunteers. These projects can range from Internet cable installation to painting and general landscaping. Schools are selected by Hands on DC based on a variety of criteria, among them: need, the ability of HoDC to match its volunteers' skills with the schools' requested projects, past participation, scheduled major renovations and the school's willingness to participate in the one-day event.
